Documentary Reveals Stories Behind the Most Tragic Sea Disasters Killing 20,000 Soldiers and Refugees During WWII

Currently Airing on The National Geographic Channel

New York, NY – (June 6, 2006) – Genius Products, Inc. (OTCBB:GNPI) today announced the August 2006 DVD release of Wellspring’s Ghosts of the Baltic Sea, a retelling of a series of horrific events that claimed the lives of over 20,000 people. In 1945 the greatest Maritime disasters of our time occurred when three German evacuation ships were attacked, sinking deep into the Baltic Sea. Hosted by renowned undersea explorer, Dr. Robert Ballard, founder of the Titanic, the German battleship Bizmarck and the US aircraft carrier Yorktown, Ghosts of the Baltic Sea takes viewers through the disastrous chain of events, as told through the experiences of four German survivors. Dr. Ballard explores the depths of the Baltic waters as the survivors describe the horror and the tragedy of the attacks. Currently airing on the National Geographic Channel, Ghosts of the Baltic Sea will be available beginning August 15, 2006 for a suggested retail price of $19.98. The dealer order date is July 4, 2006.

“For more than 60 years, the world knew nothing about these catastrophes,” stated Justine Brody, Vice President of Marketing. “Now through the eyes of the remaining survivors and the explorative talent of Dr. Ballard, the tragedies are revealed.”

During the last few months of the second World War, Germany used the “Wilhelm Gustloff,” “General Steuben” and the “Goya” for ‘operation runs’ transporting refugees and soldiers to safe grounds. These ships became Russian targets after sailing out of the German coast and were hit with torpedoes by Russian submarines – killing almost everyone aboard. Now, harbored at the bottom of the sea, the ships serve as graveyards to all of those who perished. 61 years later, Robert Ballard sails out to the same cold Baltic Sea with four of the last remaining survivors to find these ships and make peace with their tragic past. Through the eyes of four German survivors, they describe their first-hand experiences. They share their heart-wrenching stories of how they managed to escape, while they are finally given a chance to say good-bye to their loved ones.

The 'Wilhelm Gustloff' – On January 30, 1945, the 'Wilhelm Gustloff' was converted to a refugee ship and left the Baltic harbor of Gydnia (Gotenhafen) with approximately 16,000 women, children and soldiers. After Russians fired torpedoes, sinking the ship, only about 900 people were rescued from the sub-freezing Baltic waters, making this the single worse case maritime disaster in history. The tragic amount of deaths from this attack exceeds three times the amount of deaths aboard the Titanic.

The 'General Steuben' - Eleven days after the Gustloff sank, the 'General Steuben' sailed out of the harbor crammed with as many as 5,200 wounded soldiers and refugees. Lurking behind the ship was the same S-13 that attacked the Gustloff. Russian torpedoes sank the converted passenger liner in just seven minutes. Only 659 people survived.

The 'Goya’- The freighter ship had been making numerous ‘operation runs’ for several weeks. In April of 1945, approximately 7,000 refugees desperately rushed onto the Goya knowing it was the absolute last carrier out of Germany. Soviet submarines blasted the ship, sinking the Goya to the bottom of the sea in just minutes, killing almost all passengers and leaving only 183 survivors.

In addition to airing on the National Geographic Channel, these three ships have been featured in National Geographic Magazine. In Ghosts of The Baltic Sea, Dr. Robert Ballard describes these tragedies as the most horrific events in the history of the world.
