SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- American politics is a contact sport! The critically acclaimed film STREET FIGHT, a riveting and inspiring story about a young political underdog's relentless fight against the underbelly of American democracy, political intimidation and racial politics, unveils on DVD on January 9, 2007 from Genius Products. Nominated for a 2005 Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature and a 2006 News & Documentary Emmy®, STREET FIGHT provides a ringside account of the controversial 2002 mayoral race in Newark, New Jersey as the city's political machine unfolds amid accusations of terrorism, corruption, a Watergate-style burglary and sexual scandals. The DVD includes an interview with Marshall Curry and has a suggested retail price of $24.95.
Timed to coincide with Black History Month, STREET FIGHT, directed and produced by Marshall Curry and executive produced by Liz Garbus and Rory Kennedy, the enthralling documentary vividly captures the 2002 bare-knuckles mayoral race of Newark, N.J. between the recently elected Mayor Cory Booker, a then 32-year old Rhodes Scholar/Yale Law School grad, and Sharpe James, the four-term incumbent twice his age.
The film follows Booker as he campaigns through Newark's housing projects and squares off against an old-style political machine that uses any means necessary ranging from harassment to voter intimidation to crush its opponents.
The film further sheds light on important questions about American democracy, power and -- in a surprising twist -- race. Both Booker and James are African-American Democrats, but when the former Mayor Sharp James accuses the Ivy League educated Booker of not being "really black" it forces voters to examine both how we define race in this country.
STREET FIGHT won the Audience Award at Tribeca Film Festival, Hot Docs Festival (Toronto) and SilverDocs Festival (Washington DC), and was given the Jury Prize for Best International Documentary at Hot Docs and the Jacqueline Donnet Award by the International Documentary Association.
